Ecotourism in Colombia
Colombia is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world with various environments, from dense rainforests and vast mountain ranges to cold paramos and sandy beaches. Nestled within these beautiful landscapes, the following eco-hostels offer a haven for conscious travelers seeking to connect with nature, and themselves, while leaving as little environmental impact as possible. All of these hostels tick most of the following boxes:
-Family or community owned and run.
-Beautiful natural surroundings
-Practice permaculture or environmentalism
-Benefit the local community
-Serve vegetarian food
-Provide healing or spiritual practices
-Offer cultural or nature-based activities.
Jaba Jan - Palomino
Brilliant hostel - away from the noise and surrounded by glorious wildlife but still a wonderful atmosphere where everyone gets on and you feel like a family. So laid back but helpful staff with really good food with lots of veggie options, a private stretch of beach that is nicer than the beach in palomino itself, perfect place to unwind and relax. They do activities like pizza nights and open mics in the evening and only a 3-minute mototaxi into palomino if you wanted to go into town.
La Pacha Hostel - San Gil - Barichara.
A family run eco-farm with low impact accommodation including a hobbit house dorm and private yurts. Worth a visit just for the delicious curries! Lots of hiking, rivers, waterfalls and extreme sports close by, and also near to Barichara, full of beauty and cultural activities.El Tejido - San Gil
A medicinal and permaculture community in the middle of glorious countryside, built entirely by bioconstruction, with a rushing river alongside it. Teiku Tayrona is a healing community and permaculture-farm located on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada of Colombia. You can stay as short-term guests in their eco-cabins or stay for longer periods as volunteers. La Ponderosa Reserve is an off-grid regenerative hostel, nestled within a hidden jungle paradise of the Colombian Sierra Nevada. Surrounding the land is an incredible crystalline river and white sandy river-side beach. Private and pristine, you can swim, tube, or even raft all the way to the Caribbean sea. With supplies of food arriving from local farmers on horseback, it’s easy to feel as though you've stepped back in time and into an authentic experience of rural Colombia…La Casa de Francois - San Agustín
the village of San Agustin, 550km south of
Bogota in the department of Huila. The hotel
is just 200 meters from village on top of a
small hill at 1,700m above sea level, and has
panoramic views across the Andes towards
the Purace and Solala volcanoes (4570m and
4300m).
You will stay in one of our unique, natural
cabins (bamboo and wood construction, cob
walls interspersed with bottles) spread out
among the rolling grounds of an old coffee
farm, surrounded by colourful gardens,
coffee bushes and fruit trees. All cabins
have balconies with hammocks so you can
enjoy the peace and beauty of this unique
location.
A quiet little corner of Tintipan Island, best reached by boat from Rincon del Mar, with beautiful cabins, great food and nice little swimming areas . I include it here because of the luminous jellyfish tour we did which was absolutely incredible. A lot of people offer luminous plankton tours but these luminous jellyfish are another level. So cool!

It's sometimes hard to find a hostel that does the minimum, like recycle their rubbish, so it's such a relief to know these eco-friendly places exist!
